Lakers Are Eyeing Valančiūnas as a Potential Backup

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly eyeing Jonas Valančiūnas as a potential trade target ahead of the NBA trade deadline on February 6. With the team recently acquiring Dorian Finney-Smith to bolster their wing depth, their focus has now shifted to enhancing the frontcourt.

Valančiūnas: A Perfect Fit for the Lakers?

Valančiūnas, the Washington Wizards' seasoned center, has emerged as a prime candidate to provide much-needed support for the Lakers. The Lithuanian veteran is averaging 11.7 points and 8 rebounds per game, shooting an impressive 55.4% from the field this season. His ability to secure the paint and provide a strong physical presence could complement Anthony Davis perfectly.

The Lakers rank in the bottom five for points in the paint and second-chance points allowed. Adding Valančiūnas would help address these weaknesses while giving Davis more freedom to operate offensively. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, "The Lakers need a center who can either complement Anthony Davis or back him up effectively. Valančiūnas fits the bill perfectly."

Challenges in the Deal

Although Valančiūnas seems like an ideal fit, the Wizards' asking price may prove to be a stumbling block. The Lakers currently possess a few second-round picks to offer, but Washington’s demands could exceed Los Angeles' trade assets.

In addition, several teams are also in the market for backup centers, creating competition for Valančiūnas' services. ESPN’s Michael Wright notes, "The Lakers have multiple options but must act decisively to secure the right deal before the deadline."

Backup Plans for the Lakers

If a deal for Valančiūnas doesn’t materialize, the Lakers are likely to explore other options in the trade market. Potential alternatives include acquiring affordable big men to provide depth without jeopardizing future flexibility.

With LeBron James at 40 years old and Anthony Davis looking to remain healthy through the postseason, the Lakers must capitalize on their championship window. Their 2020 title remains their only postseason success in recent years, and bolstering their roster before the deadline could be the key to a deeper playoff run. As trade discussions continue, Valančiūnas represents a pivotal opportunity for the Lakers to address their frontcourt concerns. Whether they can strike a deal remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Lakers are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to build a title-contending roster.
