Mike Maignan to Stay at AC Milan After Chelsea Move Collapses
In a strong statement of intent, AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that Mike Maignan will stay at AC Milan for the upcoming season. This ends weeks of speculation linking the French goalkeeper with a summer move to Chelsea.
Allegri, who returned to the San Siro in May, said in a press conference:
“Maignan remains the captain and is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. I am very happy he decided to stay.”
Chelsea's Failed Pursuit of Mike Maignan
Chelsea were reportedly in advanced negotiations for Maignan in June. According to Standard Sport, AC Milan demanded £25 million, while Chelsea refused to exceed their £15 million final offer. Talks eventually broke down on deadline day.
Although rumors suggested Chelsea could revisit negotiations after the Club World Cup, Allegri shut down those claims. He emphasized Maignan’s leadership role and his importance to the Rossoneri's future.
The Blues will now proceed with Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, and Mike Penders as their first-team goalkeeper options.
Why Mike Maignan Is Crucial to AC Milan’s Rebuild
Maignan, 29, has consistently ranked among the top goalkeepers in Europe since joining AC Milan from Lille. He was pivotal during Milan’s Serie A title-winning 2021–22 season and remains a fan favorite.
Data from FBref reveals that Maignan ranked in the top five Serie A goalkeepers for:
- Save percentage (78.3%)
- Post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed (+6.8)
- Long pass completion rate (64.2%)
These metrics show his elite shot-stopping and distribution skills, which are essential to Allegri’s system.
“Maignan’s mix of reflexes and leadership make him indispensable,” noted football analyst Fabrizio Romano on his podcast Here We Go.
AC Milan’s Summer Strategy: Retention and Reinforcement
AC Milan endured a difficult 2024–25 campaign. They finished eighth in Serie A, missing out on Champions League qualification and lost 1-0 to Bologna in the Coppa Italia final.
To bounce back, Allegri has focused on retaining key players and signing experienced talent. In addition to Maignan, Rafael Leão is also expected to remain at the club, despite interest from Bayern Munich.
The most high-profile incoming transfer is Luka Modrić, who will join on a free transfer from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup.
“Modric is an important and exceptional player,” said Allegri. “He does not need an introduction.”
Modrić is expected to sign a one-year deal in August.
What This Means for AC Milan in 2025–26
With Mike Maignan to stay at AC Milan, the club sends a clear message to rivals: they are serious about reclaiming domestic and European relevance.
Maignan’s leadership, combined with Modrić’s experience and Leão’s attacking flair, gives Milan the core needed to challenge again.
The decision to keep Maignan, especially with only one year left on his contract, suggests Milan are likely preparing to offer him a new deal.
