'We Obviously Made a Mistake' with De'Vondre Campbell Contract

Dec 19, 2024Author: Klind Parangoni

The San Francisco 49ers’ decision to sign linebacker De'Vondre Campbell has come under scrutiny following his three-game suspension. Head coach Kyle Shanahan’s candid remarks about the situation highlight the challenges the team faced in balancing their roster needs with risk management.

Kyle Shanahan on De'Vondre Campbell

Kyle Shanahan, reflecting on Campbell's signing, admitted, “We obviously made a mistake.” Shanahan’s familiarity with Campbell dates back to their time with the Atlanta Falcons, where Shanahan was the offensive coordinator during Campbell’s rookie season. Despite knowing Campbell’s potential, the decision to bring him to San Francisco this offseason has proven costly.

Shanahan elaborated, “We look into everything. You weigh the risk-reward of stuff… At the time, we thought it was our best option. And it didn’t work out.”

A Risky Move for San Francisco

The 49ers signed Campbell to a one-year, $5 million deal after his release from the Green Bay Packers. This move came in response to Dre Greenlaw’s Achilles injury, which left the team scrambling for a starting-caliber linebacker. Shanahan explained the urgency of the situation:

“We knew we were going to need a starting-caliber linebacker. We had two guys we thought we had committed but lost in free agency. Then another guy got cut and became available.”

Campbell initially proved to be a productive addition, becoming the team’s second-leading tackler with 79 tackles and two passes defended. However, his refusal to enter the game against the Los Angeles Rams marked the breaking point in his tenure with the team.

De'Vondre Campbell’s Journey

Campbell’s NFL career has been a mix of highs and lows. In 2021, he earned All-Pro honors with the Green Bay Packers, amassing 146 tackles, two sacks, and multiple forced turnovers. However, his release from Green Bay and subsequent comments on social media hinted at underlying tensions.

The 49ers hoped to give him a fresh start, but his time in San Francisco has ended on a sour note. With playoff hopes dwindling, the 49ers are now without a key defensive piece for the remainder of the season.

What’s Next for the 49ers?

As the 49ers prepare for must-win games against the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, and Arizona Cardinals, they face the challenge of filling the void left by Campbell. The suspension underscores the risks inherent in mid-season signings and the importance of thorough vetting processes.

Shanahan’s acknowledgment of the team’s misstep demonstrates accountability, but it also raises questions about roster-building strategies in high-stakes situations.

Summing UP

Kyle Shanahan’s remarks on De'Vondre Campbell reveal a complex narrative of risk, reward, and unforeseen outcomes. While Campbell’s time with the 49ers was short-lived, it serves as a cautionary tale for teams navigating the pressures of NFL roster management.
